General Richard B.Myers, former Joint Chief of Staff of USA and JAAGA
honorary member, came to Japan in middle of December to be guest speaker
at Nikkei-CSIS symposium in Tokyo. On 7th December, JAAGA members exchanged
information and opinion with Gen.Myers about our interesting issues, especially
improvement and strengthening US-Japan alliance. Gen.Myers strongly supported
JASDF about JASDF's equipment programs and JASDF's participating to Cope
Guam Exercise etc. when he was in active service. General Sugiyama (former
Joint Chief of Staff, Japan), Toutake JAAGA president, General Yoshida
(former Chief of Staff, JASDF), Ochi JAAGA vice president, Hirose JAAGA
chairman, secretariat Yamamoto and secretariat Nagaiwa joined to this meeting. Gen.Myers,
Gen.Sugiyama and other participants are old friend since they were active,
so they frankly talked about the hardship which they had overcome, and
exchanged opinions on our country's situation surrounded by China and Korea
Peninsula, next generation jet fighter, Futenma and many other military
politico issues. Gen.Myers commented that he had concern about recent political
uncertainty in Japan from the point of view of maintaining strong alliance
When JAAGA delegation to US visited to Embassy of Japan in Washington DC. in September this year, Ambassador Fujisaki stated that "in order to establish reliable alliance between Japan-US, we will make list of US soldiers who have experience of station in Japan, and we will build grass-root network." Gen.Myers said that "I think this program is actively promoting, and concrete organization will be established near future." I hope that this program will be strongly proceeded and this program will exert good influence to JAAGA purpose and JAAGA activities.
